PN hosts Western Pacific Naval Symposium
🗓 Ocotber 19, 2021

True to its diplomatic role and adapting to the New Normal brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine Navy shall host the Western Pacific Naval Symposium 2021 on 26 to 27 October 2021 virtually. The event, which centers upon the theme “Effective Ocean Governance for Regional Partnership and Stability” brings together Chiefs of Navies or their representatives from 20 countries in the West Pacific in an online forum to build trust and confidence among the navies; increase cooperation and the ability to operate together; address shared maritime security concerns in the region; and to exchange information on relevant shared maritime security issues. Heads of navies from observer countries shall also be in attendance.

The Symposium’s objectives include discussing and developing cooperative initiatives, and identifying those that merit further development and practice; exploring and developing new ways of enhancing friendship and professional cooperation; developing Navy-to-Navy relationships at a variety of levels to build confidence and trust for today and the future; exchanging information on a broad range of maritime matters of mutual interest; and ensuring lines of communication are established and maintained in order to facilitated continued liaison among delegates outside the Symposia.

The two-day event will commence with a principals-only session, a closed-door executive session for WPNS members only. Meanwhile, the symposium plenary session shall be held on the last day of the event. Day 2 of the WPNS will focus on discussions of agenda items from the previous WPNS workshops and the confirmation of future activities which are designed to further improve the engagement among the WPNS member states and observer countries. The Flag Officer in Command, PN VADM ADELUIS S BORDADO PN, will join the other Chiefs of Navies for the Symposium and will chair the entire proceedings.

Securing the vast maritime space of the Western Pacific and preserving stability in the area requires the collective effort of the Navies of the region. Stable waters provide inclusive access to the mega-diverse marine resources and trade routes which are necessary for economic growth. The Philippines shall be among the countries which shall benefit from this. The PN’s hosting of the WPNS is evidence that the organization is committed to peaceful and diplomatic measures to respond to the country’s defense and development requirements: through strengthening its relationship with its neighbors, it can build its defensive capabilities to protect our seas and through promotion of a peaceful Western Pacific, it can pave the way towards the equitable and just use of our oceans, and thus propel sustainable, inclusive development.
