Paving the way for the Western Pacific Naval Symposium in May, WPNS Workshop 2020 concludes

MAKATI CITY, Metro Manila- The three-day preluding workshop for the Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) 2020 hosted by the Philippine Navy culminated in a closing ceremony held at Shangri-La Hotel here Thursday, February 13.

The Chief of Naval Staff and WPNS Workshop 2020 chairman, Rear Adm. Rey Dela Cruz, expressed his great appreciation for the hard work and lively participation of the delegates during the workshop and for their commitment to continue to work together to make the WPNS a venue for extra regional cooperation and confidence building.

As an avenue to outline the framework of matters which will be discussed during the symposium proper to be attended by the chiefs of navy of WPNS member countries this May, the workshop concluded with a total of 11 action items ranging from the deliberation of two applications for membership to the ratification and adoption of Terms of Reference for business charter, Code of Unplanned Encounters at Sea (CUES), Junior Officers Interaction Program (JOIP), Senior Enlisted Leaders Working Group (SELWG) and Emerging Leaders Interaction Program (ELIP).

A total of 38 participants from 18 member countries and 3 Observer Navies attended the said workshop, while the Fijian Navy and Myanmar Navy, were represented to forward their application for membership to the WPNS. The Peruvian Navy will be the next year’s host of the workshop.

More than a meeting of minds, this workshop reinforces favorable relationships among participating navies toward information sharing and finding solutions in matters of defense and security.

  • The Philippine Navy (PN) successfully conducted the Initial Planning Conference (IPC) for the 17th Western Pacific Naval Symposium International Fleet Review (WPNS-IFR) last 17-18 September 2019 at the Diamond Hotel, Malate, Manila.
