The Western Pacific Naval Symposium

The Western Pacific Naval Symposium are a series of biennial meetings of the Pacific nations to discuss naval matters held on even numbered years. A WPNS workshop is held on odd numbered years in between the symposiums.


At the International Seapower Symposium in 1987 agreement was reached "to establish a forum where leaders of regional navies could meet to discuss cooperative initiatives". The first meeting was held in 1988.

Member countries as of 2019: Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Tonga, United Kingdom, United States of America, and Vietnam. The Philippine Navy is the naval warfare service branch of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. It has an estimated strength of 24,000 active service personnel, including the 7,500-strong Philippine Marine Corps. It shares the responsibility of patrolling the maritime borders with the Philippine Coast Guard, a formerly attached unit which became a separate maritime law enforcement agency in 1998.


To organize, train, equip, maintain, develop and deploy forces for prompt and sustained naval and maritime operations to accomplish the AFP mission.


By 2020, we shall be stong and credible NAVY that our maritime nation can be proud of.

  • The Philippine Navy (PN) successfully conducted the Initial Planning Conference (IPC) for the 17th Western Pacific Naval Symposium International Fleet Review (WPNS-IFR) last 17-18 September 2019 at the Diamond Hotel, Malate, Manila.

  • The primary goal of the WPNS is to increase cooperation and ability to operate together, and build trust and confidence between Navies in the Region by providing a framework to enable the discussion of maritime issues of mutual interest, the exchange of information, the practice and demonstration of capabilities, and the exchange of personnel.
